Duarte – The Slaw Dogs Soft Opening
A lot has been happening at the northeast corner of Huntington Drive and Buena Vista, with the opening of the 99 Cent Only Store and now The Slaw Dogs. I stopped by The Slaw Dogs soft opening on March 26, had a great hot dog, met Ray, his wife, and son. I had a difficult time selecting my hot dog, but went with the Original, and loved every bite! While I ate, I decided on my next visit I’m going to get The Green Monster, with roasted green chile, chipotle mayo, grilled onion, pepperjack, and spicy garlic salsa.
This is The Slaw Dogs third location, with one in Pasadena and one in Woodland Hills. The space at 1355 Huntington Drive was formerly occupied by The Great Onion, who moved a few blocks east to 2150 Huntington Drive in a larger location.

I LOVE hot dogs and have been looking forward to its opening for weeks. I also like the idea of supporting local business, especially if not a big chain. Stopped in first Monday it was opened, and will probably never step foot in it again. The menu can be daunting, and I just wanted a little something to get a taste of what they had to offer – but apparently not being under-12, the woman behind the counter refused to sell me a Kid’s Meal! At $5.99 it didn’t seem like much of a bargain anyway (the couple ahead of me spent $19.00 for really not much more). Considering that a regular customer can frequent a place they like several times a week, week-after-week – it struck me as rather short-sighted. Maybe their business savvy lies elsewhere…
Oh, did I mention I LOVE hot dogs?
Thanks for your feedback. I love hot dogs too, but I must say it is nice once in a while to get a “gourmet” type hot dog. I liked The Slaw Dogs and will go back. But for value, it is hard to beat Costco’s $1.63 for a quarter pound hot dog and soda. At least at the Irwindale location, you don’t have to be a member to get in to the food court!
Your information is incorrect. The building originally housed a Pioneer Chicken. Later it became the GREEN Onion (not the GREAT Onion.) The Green Onion moved there from the location further east on Huntington that the Great Onion eventually took over.
Thanks for the correction!
